Sezen Aksu is widely known as a successful songwriter. Her work with Tarkan resulted in continental hits like "Şımarık" and "Şıkıdım" and her collaboration with Goran Bregović widened her international audience. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) named her one of the "50 Great Voices" of the world. Aksu campaigns against misogyny, illiteracy, discrimination, bullying and homophobia. She is a major gay icon, with the Turkish LGBT community embracing her as a pop culture representative. Aksu has been married and divorced four times, and has a son, Mithat Can, who is lead vocalist of the band Pist'on.
