Dutch decorative artist and illustrator of children's books. She was the second child of the merchant and art collector Godfried August Bodenheim (1840-1894) and Johanna Wispelweij (married 7 Aug 1869, Zwolle). The family became rich in the clothing industry, producing uniforms amongst others. After the death of her father her mother ran the business as "de Wed. G.A. Bodenheim". Nelly belonged to group of Amsterdam Joffers around Lizzy Ansingh. With Ansingh she visited the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam (1893-1895) after visiting the Dagteekenschol (drawing school) for girls in Amsterdam (1887-1892). Rich girls were not to supposed to prepare for a normal job in those times, From Jan Veth (1864-1925) she learned the art of drawing silhouettes (1895-1896). Veth stimulated her and in 1895 her first litho drawing appeared in the Kroniek. She illustrated "Rietjes pop" (1896) of Tine van Berken. Many illustrations for children's books would follow. Since 1913 she made original needle work and she created costumes tor the theatre. Bodenheim never married and lived a rather withdrawn life in her atelier on the Herengracht 524. She died in Amsterdam on 7 January 1951. Link to Dutch Wikipedia
