American troubled white male who exploded into a berserk state in September 2002. Jeffrey's girlfriend, Johanna Vitale, 30, of Salem, picked him up at her house and they headed for New Hampshire with him driving. He seemed distraught and began shouting at her. When they stopped in Woburn, MA, Johanna grabbed the keys from the ignition and drove back to home. Later in the day, Jeffrey phoned Johanna from North Station in Boston, threatening to kill her and her family if she did not pick him up and drive him to the South Shore. She complied and he continued to threaten her family, ranting that he was not afraid of the police or of death. Johanna was once more able to get hold of the car keys, with Jeffrey hitting her. He reached into the back seat and grabbed her little dog, throwing it out the window; it sustained a broken leg. Their fight continued outside of the car with Jeffrey slamming her against the guard rail and repeatedly shouting, "Are you ready to die?" He then left, speeding away southward, leading police on a high-speed chase through two towns, Pembroke and Duxbury, MA. He finally drove his car into a yard in Marshfield and tried to escape on foot, unsuccessfully. He was held without bail and ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
