Dutch cellist, conductor, a prominent lesbian and a member of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. Frieda was the daughter of the pianist Aron Belinfante (28 May 1870, Amsterdam – 2 February 1924, Amsterdam) and Georgine Antoinette Hesse (18 April 1878, Amsterdam - 5 October 1961, Amsterdam),who married 26 July 1900 (29 Tamuz 5660) in Amsterdam. They divorced on 2 October 1917 16 Tishrei 5678) in Amsterdam. Frieda descended from a line of Portuguese Sephardic Jews who arrived in Holland in the 17th century and whose ancestry can be traced back to 16th-century Portugal. Other well-known descendants include the writers Emmy Belinfante (23 March 1856 - ), Isaac Cohen Belinfante, Jewish theologian Moses Cohen Belinfante and the journalist Emilie Belinfante (11 January 1875, Den Haag -7 July 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau). Juni 1943 wurden Willem Arondeus, Johan Brouwer, Sam van Musschenbroek, Karl Gröger, Henri Halberstadt, Rudi Bloemgarten, Auguste Chrétie Reitsma, Cornelis Roos, Sjoerd Bakker, Cornelis Leende Barentsen und Coos Hartoch zum Tode verurteilt und am 1. Juli 1943 hingerichtet. Gerrit van der Veen konnte untertauchen, wurde aber später verhaftet und am 10. Juni 1944 hingerichtet. Frieda Belinfante konnte untertauchen, indem sie sich als Mann verkleidete. After the war, Belinfante immigrated to the United States and continued her career in music. She was the founding artistic director and conductor of the Orange County Philharmonic.
