American athlete who competed mainly in the 100 metres, winning gold and bronze Olympic medals before being banned for doping. Gaines competed for the United States in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., in the 4 x 100 metres where she won the gold medal with teammates Gail Devers, Inger Miller and Gwen Torrence. In the same event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney she won bronze with teammates Marion Jones, Torri Edwards and Nanceen Perry. In 2003, Gaines was issued a Public Warning and had her results disqualified for the detection of Modafinil. The same year she was investigated as part of the BALCO scandal and in 2004 she received a two-year doping ban. Recently, she (with her other 4x100 metre teammates) had been asked to return her bronze medal won at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 as well as other achievements due to steroid use. She and five other members of the 2000 team would successfully appeal the IOC's decision to force them to return their 2000 medals in July 2010. Link to Wikipedia biography
