German banker, politician and patron of the arts, who helped finance the Baghdad Railway, AEG and Siemens. Due to his experience abroad, he was particularly responsible for the foreign business of Deutsche Bank and was at the time influential in German foreign policy. As the son of a renowned Frankfurt family, Gwinner completed a banking apprenticeship, which followed long periods abroad. In 1885 in Frankfurt am Main, Winner married Anna Speyer (1861-1940), daughter of the German-Jewish banker Philipp Speyer (1815-96) and his wife Charlotte Stern (1824-?). In 1888 Gwinner became the sole owner of the bank Riess & Itzinger in Berlin, which he continued to operate under his own name. In 1891 he joined the Society of Friends and bought the Alhambra dome as a gift to Berlin, which is now in the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. In 1894 he liquidated his bank to accept a position on the board of Deutsche Bank, where he worked closely with Georg von Siemens. He was a member of the board until 1919, and spokesman from 1910 to 1919. From 1919 to 1931 he was a member of the company's supervisory board. From 1916 until his death he was Senator of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. Gwinner died on 29 December 1931 in Berlin, aged 75. Link to Wikipedia biography (German)
