Scottish writer and artist whose first novel, Lanark (1981), written over almost 30 years, was described by The Guardian as "one of the landmarks of 20th-century fiction." His novel Poor Things (1992) won the Whitbread Novel Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize. He described himself as a civic nationalist and a republican. Gray's works combine elements of realism, fantasy, and science fiction, plus clever use of typography and his own illustrations. He also wrote on politics, in support of socialism and Scottish independence, and on the history of English literature. He was married twice and had one son, born in 1964. Following a short illness, Gray died in Queen Elizabeth hospital, Glasgow, on 29 December 2019, the day after his 85th birthday. Link to Wikipedia biography
