French Catholic priest, entrepreneur and homoeopath who directly criticised so-called classical medicine, leading to several trials and convictions, and to his imprisonment in 1923 and 1925, each time for three months. In 1928, tired of having to fight against the medical authorities the abbot avoided further arrest by choosing exile in Belgium. The Parisian pharmacist Louis Maupy manufactured "small bottles" of Chaupitre's homeopathic remedies, and the flasks were soon produced on a large scale, labelled with the abbot's portrait and signature so that patients would not be deceived by imitations. In February 1928, the brand Abbé Chaupitre was registered and the Laboratory of Homeopathic Medicines of the same name was created. His associates Alcide Liorit, Louis Maupy and Emmanuel Porteu de la Morandière took over from the ecclesiastic, who entrusted them with his business. A new manufacturing plant was opened in 1931 in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris. Tired of fighting with his detractors and threatened with imprisonment, the abbot fled, travelling through Europe and the Middle East. From 1933, Abbé Chaupitre's laboratory began the publication of almanacs. So much in vogue, these calendars were used by peddlers. They contained up to 200 pages of practical tips, cooking recipes, games, and also travel stories. Chaupitre died on 21 April 1934 in Naples, Italy. That year he mentioned the journeys he had made at the end of his life in the almanac. The 1935 edition paid tribute to Chaupitre and a new bottle from his range was unveiled the following year.
